College Scholarships – College of Alameda Awards Auto Scholarships
Opie Gilbert graduated from Berkeley High School in 2003, and from College of Alameda in 2005. For the last year and a half of his life, he worked in the research department at the Chevron Corporation facility in Richmond.
Gilbert has awarded Daniel Gilbert Memorial Scholarships to students in the College of Alameda automotive technology department every semester since December 2007. He has guaranteed funding of at least three $300 scholarships each semester. The scholarships, funded through donations by family, friends, and Chevron Corporation, are just one of several projects started by Stephen Gilbert in memory of his son.
To be considered for a scholarship, each student has to have completed at least 20 units in the Auto Tech program with a grade of B or higher, demonstrated a genuine interest in learning the skills needed to succeed as a mechanic, and been recommended by one or more of his current instructors.
