I attend a top 50 engineering school, with a 3.7 gpa after 3 semesters. My major is Chemical Engineering and I am going for a minor in Psychology. Yet I have not received any scholarships all my finance for college comes from loans. My mother has Wegener’s Granulomatosis, she owns a dancing school but it has declined in business since her diagnosis a few years ago because for about two years she was unable to really keep up with it although she is doing well now. My father is a carpenter neither went to college, I have asked the people at my school if there is anything available and they just said they would put me on the watch list. I would say we’re in the middle class but shouldn’t I get something!?
I have filled out a FAFSA, but did not receive aid.
The thing that really bothers me is that financial need is according to my parents even though I am the one paying for my education the loans are in MY name and I will be paying them not my parents so what does their income have to do with it.
You need to fill out the FAFSA. That goes by financial need and if they determine you need financial help, the government will help with finances. Otherwise start looking at scholarships. They are free money but you need to fill out a lot of paperwork to apply. There is a site called scholarships.com which is very good.
**With your high GPA and major the best route then would be to go for scholarships that are given on merit instead of need. The FAFSA works on the “need”, some scholarships work on the ‘merit” where your grades and background count.
