Affirmative Action gives groups an unfair advantage based on factors that one can’t control, in my opinion. Its not my fault i’m white, so why should I possibly not get accepted or not get a scholarship because of that? But it should be the same with kids who get into colleges solely because of sports. Its not fair when someone with a much lower GPA than you, who hasn’t worked nearly as hard academically, gets rewarded based on a talent that has nothing to do with education. Same with kids who get in easier because of their parents money or legacy. Its not my fault that my parents didn’t donate a library or never went to that college before. Shouldn’t it just be about academics?
I knew a guy who smoked weed all the time in high school and got mostly B’s and C’s, and got into Brown because he was a great lacrosse player. and my friend Jess had a 4.2 gpa, captain of the soccer team, tons of volunteer hours, etc. and didn’t get into Brown. thats just NOT FAIR!

I say keep affirmative action and get rid of those silly sport scholarships.
The hockey players at my university are like 5-10 years older than the rest of us, lol~
edit: I agree with you there. If they want to play sports, it schould come secondary to their scholarly activities. What really sucked in my high school was that some of the teachers would be easier on the preppy jock kids and pad their grades in ways so they wouldn’t fail. It used to really make me mad that I would work hard an get an A, maybe B , and they would always be only one letter grade behind me despite not doing the work, and even showing up to class with no pens/pencils, stuff like that. Sucks.
sports bring money into the colleges. so if we had public post secondary education i could understand your beef, but since colleges need money it will not just be about academics.
…totally “blind” applications?? What a concept! It’ll never fly, though. (Sports brings in too much money, for one thing…)
The legacy program should be eliminated because it is as unfair as affirmative action.
Donor programs are a different story; these people are paying their way in. Their capital provides a benefit to the institution and it is the epitome of fair that they extract a personal benefit from their contribution. Universities like every other institution public and private run on money and they have to have some way to reward their donors or there will be no donors. Fact of life get used to it.
Sports scholarships are also earned. They provide a distinct advantage to the University, they bring in financial support. 90,000 people will not buy tickets to see the Women’s Studies program in action but they will spend money to see Sam Bradford throw a football. You may not think its fair but Sam’s arm is helping to pay for that liberals arts program and he has the right to be compensated in some way for it.
Racial affirmative action is unconstitutional, because the *intended meaning* of the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause was to prohibit racial discrimination, ……… not ALL kids of discrimination, only racial discrimination. There has not been and probably never will be any ruling by “the Supremes” that sports scholarships and legacy scholarships are constitutionally unacceptable.
Affirmative action will always exist. Most conservatives think that it means letting minorities in schools, but George W. Bush went to school on an Affirmative action program. he was admitted to Yale, because his father graduated from Yale. they also have affirmative action policies for the United States Military Academy (west point) If your parent graduate, you get an automatic scholarship. in addition, and child of a service person Killed in action gets a automatic scholarship. John McCain was a benefactor of Affirmative action, he had 2 generations that graduated from the Naval Academy.
Now do you still think it is an unfair advantage?
as far as the sports thing, guess what, your in America, and the most important thing is MONEY, period. if it makes money, they want it.
that is why we pay our teacher that teach our children 30,000 a year, and a guy that hits a baseball really good 4 Million a year.
No, it should not just be about academics. It should be about academic excellence and preparing students for the real world and diverse experiences. When colleges consider applications, they always consider the student body as a whole and academics/total package of students seeking admissions.
Sports also brings in a lot of money to colleges and universities, so they recruit top athletes to represent their schools and communities. It just is what it is. Just like jobs, schools don’t have to look only at gpa.
If it were between a student with a 3.9 that did nothing but study and a 3.5 student with extracurricular activities and 1000 hours of volunteer time I would pick the 3.5 student.
I’m sure that Brown lacrosse player had more B’s than C’s and probably had a gpa above 3.0. He probably also had good teacher recommendations and brought something else to the table than just a high gpa. Just like its not your fault that you’re white it also wasnt the faults of people that were discriminated against for years that they were what they were. AA, was a tool that sought to level the playing field from those earlier injustices. Today, it should be adjusted to benefit not race/gender, but anyone that is financially challenged and shows academic potential. $20 says Brown’s enrollment is over 80% white. What do you have to say about the other white students that got in over you? Im sure some didnt have GPA’s as high as yours. Did you also reference them in this question? Were they all lacrosse players and legacies? Probably not. Dude, get over it and apply somewhere else. If you’re the academic force that you say you are then you will get in somewhere and so will your friend. If you don’t get in anywhere, its time to look in the mirror.
