Scholarship Plan – Jefferson High students could attend Walters State for free with proposed scholarship plan

If approved, the Jefferson County Community Scholarship Program would become effective beginning with the class of 2010. Graduating students must have at least a 2.7 GPA and an ACT score of 19 or an SAT score of 910.

“I’m a firm believer in this community doing something positive and recognizing that the best communities are ones that put their primary interests in education,” Palmieri said.

The program, which was modeled after similar scholarship programs in Knox County and Sevier County, is a “last dollar” scholarship, meaning students must first apply for all other scholarship and financial aid programs available through Walters State. After all aid has been applied, the scholarship will pay the balance of up to $1,500 per year.

Palmieri presented the plan to County Commission on Dec. 21, and he said the response was “overwhelmingly favorable.”

On Jan. 11, the plan will be presented to the budget committee, which will vote whether to take the proposal to the full Commission on Jan. 19, said Commissioner Murrel Jarnigan.

Palmieri said he expects it will cost about $60,000 for the first class to obtain two-year associate’s degrees, although that figure is “very preliminary,” he said.

The scholarship will initially be funded from $100,000 in excess money from the county’s capital projects fund, which was originally going to pay for a traffic light that was installed in the county. That traffic light was paid for by the state, leaving excess funds, Jarnigan said.
